Wool blend coats: what the label promises, and how to size one

Wool blend is two words that carry a legal weight. The label has to name the fibres by percentage, the lining separately, and it cannot call recycled wool new. Here is the wording, and what it means for a coat you wear over a sweater.

The label is the contract

A wool product sold in the United States has to carry a label with the fibre names and their percentages by weight. That is why our coat pages print the blend exactly as the maker states it, such as 80% wool, 20% polyester, and never round it into a friendlier word.

The lining is labelled on its own. The rule is explicit about it.

In labeling or marking garments or articles of apparel which are wool products, the fiber content of any linings, paddings, stiffening, trimmings or facings of such garments or articles of apparel shall be given and shall be set forth separately and distinctly in the stamp, tag, label, or other mark of identification of the products.16 CFR § 300.23(a), Federal Trade Commission, read 4 September 2026

New wool and recycled wool

The other word people look for is new, or virgin. The rule is short: the word may only appear on fibre that has never been reclaimed from anything.

The terms “virgin” or “new” as descriptive of a wool product, or any fiber or part thereof, shall not be used when the product, fiber or part so described is not composed wholly of new or virgin fiber which has never been reclaimed from any spun, woven, knitted, felted, braided, bonded, or otherwise manufactured or used product.16 CFR § 300.20, Federal Trade Commission, read 4 September 2026

Why we do not say it

None of the maker's pages for these coats use the word virgin, so neither do ours. The blend is a wool and polyester cloth with a quilted lining the maker describes as silk cotton, and that is the whole claim. A blend at this price is warmer for its weight than a pure wool at the same price, and it takes a shower better. It also pills sooner at the cuff and the pocket edge, which a sweater comb fixes in five minutes.

Sizing a coat you wear over a sweater

These are cut for a shirt and a sweater underneath, not for a suit jacket. Measure across the chest of a sweater you would wear under it, add two inches, and buy that. If you want the coat over tailoring, go up one size. The sleeves are cut long on purpose: a coat sleeve should cover the sweater cuff.

Care, and what the coat will not do

Wool blend is not rain gear. A short shower shrugs off and a wet afternoon soaks in, and a soaked coat wants a hanger with shoulders and a day to dry away from a radiator. Brush it rather than wash it, and dry clean once a season if it lives in a city. The sewn-in care label is a legal requirement, the same rule that covers cotton cargo, and it is the one to follow when it disagrees with us.
